Some love stories begin with a chance encounter at a coffee shop or through mutual friends. Mel and Shay’s story began in a way that perfectly reflects the modern world, on Zoom during the pandemic.

Mel was giving a virtual lecture when Shay joined the session as an attendee. During the talk, Shay raised her digital hand to ask a question. What might have been just another interaction in a virtual meeting quickly became the beginning of something much more meaningful. That simple moment sparked a connection that would grow into a relationship built on curiosity, admiration, and love.
Years later, their journey together led them to celebrate their marriage with family and friends at one of the most charming garden venues in Maryland. As a Zinnia Silver Spring wedding photographer, it was such a joy to document a celebration that felt so relaxed, intentional, and full of love.
A Vineyard First Date That Started It All
After their initial virtual meeting, Mel and Shay decided to meet in person for their first date at Black Ankle Vineyards.
They spent the afternoon enjoying wine, conversation, and the scenic views of Maryland wine country. Shay thoughtfully brought snacks for the afternoon and even guessed correctly that Mel was vegetarian. A small detail that Mel appreciated immediately.

The relaxed atmosphere of the vineyard made it easy for the two to connect, and by the end of the afternoon it was clear that their connection was something special.
Celebrating Their Marriage at Zinnia
After four wonderful years together, Mel and Shay decided that marriage was the natural next step in their journey. They were legally married in December 2024, but they wanted to host a celebration where their closest family and friends could gather and share in their joy.
For that celebration, they chose Zinnia, located in Silver Spring.
Zinnia was already a place they loved visiting together, which made it the perfect location for their wedding celebration. The gardens, welcoming atmosphere, and incredible hospitality made it feel both elegant and comfortable. This is exactly what they wanted for their day.

Their vision was simple: easy elegance.
Instead of focusing on elaborate décor or strict color palettes, Mel and Shay wanted their guests to feel relaxed and comfortable while enjoying the beauty of the gardens.
With around 55–60 guests in attendance, their celebration felt intimate, warm, and incredibly personal.
A Wedding Day Focused on Family and Connection
Because Mel and Shay were already legally married, they chose not to include a formal ceremony. Instead, the day centered on celebrating with the people who mean the most to them.
Their families played an important role in the celebration. Shay’s mom was present, along with Mel’s mom. Mel’s son was also there to celebrate the day with them.

The smaller guest list allowed Mel and Shay to spend meaningful time with everyone who attended. Guests were able to relax, enjoy the gardens, and truly connect with one another.
These kinds of weddings often create the most genuine and joyful moments.
Garden Portraits at Zinnia
One of the highlights of photographing Mel and Shay’s celebration was exploring the beautiful garden spaces around Zinnia Silver Spring Wedding.

The couple envisioned portraits near the gazebo and throughout the gardens, surrounded by flowers, trees, and lush greenery. The natural beauty of the venue created an incredible backdrop for their portraits.

From shaded garden paths to vibrant floral areas, every corner offered a beautiful setting. The soft natural light and peaceful environment made the portraits feel relaxed and timeless.

For couples planning a celebration here, Zinnia’s gardens offer endless opportunities for romantic wedding photography.
Personal Details That Made the Day Unique
One of the most refreshing aspects of Mel and Shay’s celebration was how intentionally simple and personal it was.

Rather than filling the day with elaborate vendor teams or complicated logistics, they focused on what mattered most. They created an experience their guests would enjoy.

Their flowers came from Trader Joe’s, proving that beautiful wedding details can come from simple sources. The couple also designed much of their own stationery, adding another thoughtful and personal touch.

Music for the celebration came from a carefully curated playlist played from an iPad, creating a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere throughout the evening.
A Sweet Moment: Cutting the Cake
One of the sweetest moments of the day came when Mel and Shay cut their wedding cake together.

Their cake was created by Chapman’s Bakery, and guests gathered around to celebrate the moment with them.

Even without traditional wedding elements like a first dance or formal ceremony, moments like this created a joyful rhythm for the celebration.

It was simple, genuine, and full of happiness.
